Media Literacy and Racism in the Media

This week I would like to focus on media literacy and racism in the media.  I will be pulling information from “Critical Race” by Tara J. Yosso, Census data, and YouTube.  In “Critical Race” the author focuses on Hollywood and its negative portrayal of minorities in the United States.  The article also focuses on the media as a second life long educational institution.  “Racism, as well as gender and class-based oppression, in the United States is perpetuated in the form of entertainment media.”  Tara J. Yosso talks about how films portray minorities negatively showing socioacademic failure, the cycle of poverty, lack of motivation, inclination to violence, and proclivity to unplanned pregnancy.

As the Census Data shows whites are the majority in the United States.  “Andrew Lorde defines racism as ‘the belief in the inherent superiority of one race over all other and thereby the right to dominance.”  A perfect example of racism in the media is the movie Crash.  This scene is a perfect example of racism in Hollywood.  “Crash” happens to be one of my favorite movies because each of the characters learns something about the people around them.  It shows racism and how the characters learn to overcome their prejudice.

We need more education in schools and in Hollywood to combat negative portrayals of all races, elasticities, and genders.
